IMSI

Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection (IMSI) is an advanced form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used in cases of male infertility to improve the selection of sperm for fertilization during in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Here's an overview:

  • Purpose: IMSI enhances the selection of sperm by allowing for high-magnification examination of sperm morphology before injection into the egg.

  • Procedure:
    • Sperm Selection: Sperm samples are prepared and examined using a high-powered microscope that magnifies the sperm up to 6,000 times allowing for detailed assessment of sperm morphology (shape and structure).
    • Sperm Injection: After selecting the healthiest-looking sperm, one is injected directly into the cytoplasm of each mature egg using a microneedle, similar to conventional ICSI.

  • Benefits:
    • Improved Sperm Selection: IMSI enables embryologists to identify and select sperm with normal morphology more accurately compared to conventional ICSI, potentially leading to better embryo quality and higher pregnancy rates.
    • Reduced Risk of Genetic Abnormalities: By selecting sperm with normal morphology, IMSI may reduce the risk of genetic abnormalities in offspring.
    • Enhanced Fertility Outcomes: Studies have suggested that IMSI may result in higher fertilization rates, improved embryo quality, and increased implantation rates compared to conventional ICSI, particularly in cases of severe male factor infertility.
