Diagnostic Laparoscopy
One approach to obtain a better look at the organs in your belly and your reproductive organs is to have a laparoscopy. This method can be used to diagnose various medical disorders as well as take biopsies (tissue samples that are examined). Laparoscopy is a relatively safe surgery with low risks.
Your provider can see directly at the outside of your abdomen with the laparoscope:
- Uterus
- Ovaries
- Fallopian tubes are the tubes that connect the uterus to the fallopian
- Liver
- Pancreas
- Gallbladder
- Spleen
- Stomach

- Examine a mass of tissue.
- Confirm whether or not you have endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Check for fallopian tube blockage or other causes of infertility.
A laparoscopy is performed when youre lying down with your head lower than your feet in a slightly inclined position. During surgery, youll be given general anesthesia to relax your muscles and avoid discomfort.
After that, a tiny incision near the navel is made. This incision is used to introduce the laparoscope. Your abdomen is enlarged to make it easier to see your organs. Surgical equipment for obtaining tissue samples or eliminating scar tissue may be included with the laparoscope.
